Will 3D printing change my world?-EBY
David Shukman wrote that 3D printing could be a stepping stone to letting us go beyond our own world.
The first 3D printer in the 1980s was relatively brutal and despised. but it is not the truth.
From the key components of the RAF fighter to the replacement of the body parts of the disabled, 3D printing offers incredible possibilities.
Two factors are key.
The first is that although the earliest printers can only use a limited range of polymers as raw materials, these days seem to be possible - even biological tissue.
Second, the manufacturing industry is no longer subject to geographical restrictions - advanced production is no longer in the hands of distant factories.
Printing wrenches on the International Space Station have just begun. The European Space Agency plans to print the moon base on the moon.
And thinking not only in three dimensions.
One idea is where the 4D print plays a role. Structure, printed in space, will be designed to start forming a new spacecraft.
Only a few decades ago 3D printing was an obscure curiosity, a novelty of limited application and possibilities. It is possible for human beings to explore beyond our own world.
